Corrugated & Paper Products
Over 70% of the fiberboard produced each year is made from recycled fibers. The paper industry is Britains largest recycler with two thirds of the industry directly involved in recycling. In 2006 UK paper and board mills used 4.2 million tonnes of recovered paper, with a further 3.9 million tonnes exported.
Corrugated packaging is made exclusively from sustainable resources. The industry uses fast-growing softwoods such as pine and spruce, which are being replanted faster than they are being used. Much of the wood used to make pulp for papermaking comes from forest thinnings and waste products from saw mills. Tropical forest hardwoods are not used to manufacture corrugated board as they are entirely unsuitable for packaging papers.
Scandinavia is one of the major sources of wood pulp for paper. In sweeden forest growth exceeds annual felling by up to 35%. The industry is ensuring the perpetuity of its raw materials by preserving the bio-diversity in its forests through ecological landscape planning and logging practices.
